If the trader goes bust

The bad news:
If a trader goes out of business and you haven't received you goods – but you've already paid for them – there is a risk you

might lose your money, unless you paid by credit card.

The better news:
You might be able to get a refund if you bought things from a newspaper or magazine advert – and they run an advance payment protection scheme.

There are four of these schemes:

Each has different conditions. But please note you will not be covered under any of these schemes if:
• the advert appeared in a publication that does not belong to one of the trade associations
• the advert appeared in a classified column – the small adverts
• you bought the goods from a catalogue advertised by the trader
• you only sent a deposit – not the full payment
• you don't claim within the time limit set in the scheme

Please note: before they pay up, some schemes require that traders have to be insolvent or in liquidation – it's not enough that the trader has just stopped trading.
